Pakistan bags medals at Int’l Maths Olympiad

Pakistani students showcased their exceptional mathematical prowess at the 65th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 2024, securing both silver and bronze medals in the prestigious global competition.

The event, held from July 11 to 22 in Bath, saw participation from 108 countries, with a total of 609 students (528 males and 81 females) competing. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) proudly announced the achievements of Razi Hasan Mansoor and Muhammad Ahmad Bhatti, both from Karachi. Mansoor clinched a silver medal, while Bhatti earned a bronze. Additionally, Muhammad Mehd Arif from Lahore’s Sundus School received an “Honorable Mention.”

This triumph comes shortly after another impressive feat, where two Pakistani students won bronze medals at the International Biology Olympiad in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The Pakistani delegation participated under the STEM Career Program, a collaborative initiative by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) University. The team received training at the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) University, Lahore Campus, and was mentored by Prof Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed and Dr. Hani Shakir.

Every year, under the auspices of PAEC, PIEAS University conducts the National Science Talent Competition in four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. The competition, held in 19 cities across Pakistan, selects top students to represent the country in international Olympiads through the STEM Career Program.

On the global stage, the United States, China, and South Korea emerged as the top teams. India ranked fourth with a total score of 167, just behind South Korea. The US team achieved the highest score with 192 points. India’s Aditya Mangodi achieved the fifth rank individually, marking the best performance by any member of the Indian team to date.

The Indian contingent included gold medalists Mangodi, Ananda Bhadhuri, Guwahati Talwar, and Rasil Mathur from Mumbai. Arjun Geetha from Delhi secured a silver medal, while Siddharth Chopra received an “Honorable Mention.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the Indian team’s success on social media platform X, stating, “It’s a matter of immense joy and pride that India has come 4th in its best-ever performance in the International Maths Olympiad. Our contingent has brought home 4 Golds and one Silver Medal. This feat will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular.”

The IMO continues to provide young mathematicians with a platform to showcase their skills, exchange knowledge, and build international camaraderie, fostering a global community of future scientific leaders.
